Boy Scout leaders in Troop 83 have given over six hundred hours of volunteer service in development of recreational facilities in the new Teays Valley Acres in Scott Depot.
The 74 acres under development as a community park by the Teays Valley Church of God will include walking and riding trails, camping sites and a picnic shelter.
Brothers Caleb and Korey Smith took leadership roles over two years ago to install benches and a swing set for a playground at the site.
Scout Colton Berger is building a bonfire "gathering site." The fire ring will be five feet across and lined with brick to a depth of eighteen inches. Benches will be placed on the perimeter.
Veterans in the Scouting program since their days as "Tiger Cubs," the trio told Putnam Rotarians today how teamwork and discipline guided them into their roles of community service.
"People help you push," Caleb Smith told the group. The church supported much of the cost, but businesses and individual donors contributed generously.
Scouting encourages community service for advancement to the Eagle rank, its highest award.
A special grant by Rotary will help continue the development of the community park at Teays Valley Acres.
Teays Valley Acres currently has two sand volley ball courts in addition to the nature trails and the picnic shelter, which will seat 100, and the playground and restroom facilities.
The ongoing development plan includes soccer and softball fields, basketball courts, camping cabins and a two-gymnasium facility that will also serve for conferences and banquets.
The park is open for community meetings, support groups, wedding receptions, indoor sports and more in the future “Teays Valley Community Center.”
Parties and special groups can reserve space by calling the church office at 757-9222.
