A ShelterBox for victims of the earthquake in Haiti has arrived in Port-au-Prince from Putnam Rotary.
Begun in 2000 as a relief project by the Rotary Club of Helton-Lizard in Cornwall, England, the ShelterBox organization is now the largest Rotary relief project in the world. With over than $38 million in donations, it has responded to over 80 major disasters in more than 50 countries.
Each box costs $750 (£490). This includes all materials, packing, storage, transportation and distribution to the final recipients. Assuming six month's use, this equates to shelter and warmth for less than $.41 per person per day.
To track the supplies from Putnam Rotary, go to the ShelterBox web site, and click on "Track Your Box." Be sure to select "United States of America" in the drop down menu. Enter the box number as 7682 for Putnam Rotary.
