TEAYS VALLEY - Putnam County Rotary Club member Mary Keely is the new governor of Rotary District 7550, which covers the southern half of West Virginia. Keely's term begins July 1 and will run through June 30, 2011.

Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto Service Above Self.

In her role as district governor, Keely will work with local rotary clubs throughout the district to make each club more successful.

During the year she serves as District Governor, Keely will also visit each of the 28 clubs in the district. Her first official visit as governor will be to her home club in Putnam County on July 13.

"This is an exciting and historic time for the Putnam County Rotary Club," said Putnam Rotary Club President Mike Herron.

"We are extremely proud that Mary Keely will become the first member of our club to serve as the District Governor and especially honored that she has chosen her home club for her first official visit on July 13. Rotarians in southern West Virginia will quickly discover what we have always known in Putnam County. Mary is an intelligent, articulate and effective leader who exemplifies the Rotary motto, Service Above Self, with enthusiasm and good cheer."

Keely has been a member of the Putnam Rotary Club for eight years and a Rotary member for 10 years.

Rotary International District 7550 is one of 529 Rotary Districts worldwide.

District 7550 covers southern West Virginia (from Huntington and Kenova on the Kentucky border on the west, through Charleston, south to Bluefield on the Virginia border, then east through White Sulfur Springs) with over 1,350 members and 28 clubs.

The District was established in 1915, and is part of Rotary Zone 33.
