"It's hard to get personal," Hurricane postmaster Tina McComas told Putnam Rotarians today. "It's easy to throw money at community service needs," she said, "but the real reward comes from 'hands-on' time and labor of direct personal involvement."
As a club director with responsibility for local service projects, McComas has advocated new ideas and direct participation in community activities.
Club President Chet Marshall suggested "Feed the Children," a project sponsored by Heaven Sent Ministries of Princeton. In addition to a cash grant, Marshall suggested, about 15 to 20 people could volunteer their time and labor to join in a food-packaging assembly line.
McComas has a daughter who is active in the Girl Scouts. She noted that another service club had sponsored a "pancake breakfast" to raise funds for the organization.
Local service projects by the Putnam group have included a variety of activities which include:

McComas reminded the group of the words of Sir Winston Churchill: "We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give." For her own part, Trina McComas has been giving quite a bit: Although recently inducted into the club, she has involved herself with several "hands-on" community service projects. And this in spite of a recent death in the family, a new job, and -- not least -- wedding bells for her and spouse Jeffrey.
