New officers installed,

Mary Keely, President of Putnam Rotary for the last twelve months, made her valedictory presentations today and received cheers and a standing ovation for her leadership during the year ending June 30th.

Keely had pushed for active participation and support by every Rotarian in a group where there would be no "spectator membership."

That goal was easily achieved. Keely initiated monthly themes for luncheon speakers, club assemblies each month, and leadership training. There was a thorough orientation for new members on history, community projects, and goals of Rotary. A Putnam Rotary brochure was developed, and a biographical directory of membership was distributed.

Timely records of attendance and participation encouraged members to keep active throughout her term of office.

Citation
Here photographer Sam Sentelle eagerly reaches for his President's Citation as Keely recognizes club members for effort, support and encouragement.

Keely gave out certificates of participation to members who had offered special direction and leadership in club projects during the year.

These included distribution of dictionary materials to school children, placement of courtesy benches in public places, support for senior citizen centers, and support for an international project in Nepal. Funding was also provided for a food-and-income poultry enterprise for an orphanage in Uganda.

The club revised its scholarship program and continued suport for a student Interact Club at Hurricane High School.

Keely's right hand -- the club's "enforcer" as Sergeant-at-Arms -- has been husband Robert, who developed his own unique leadership style: "I lead as I lead my wife," he explains. "We'll do this, or we'll do that, dear -- if it's alright with you."

Recognized as the "Dynamic Duo" by then President and now President for next year Don Broyles, the Keelys developed a "strategic initiative" for Rotary District 7550, a plan which was adopted at the annual conference in the spring of 2005.

The following year, Mary stepped up to lead planning for the next District Conference. She was also the Annual Fund Chairperson for the District that year.

Her efforts were rewarded by her designation as planner for a two-district state-wide conference this year.

"That's the thanks you get," quipped Putnam's Sergeant-at-Arms.

The Putnam Rotary meets at noon every Tuesday
at Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
