The new president of the club pledged to build on the success of retiring president Don Broyles.
During the past year Putnam Rotary supported Junior Achievement, the Red Cross (special donations for Hurricane Charley Relief, Tsunami relief, and, closer home, to flood relief in West Virginia), the Literacy Volunteers, and the Tri-County YMCA. A bathhose facility at the Y's Camp High-Tor was sponsored as the Centennial project by Rotary. The club also presented "Most Valuable" scholarships to Putnam graduates, and suport for a HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth) Leadership scholarship. The club also undertook its its first "international project" -- books for the Entebbe orphanage school in Uganda.
In the 2004-05 fiscal year, Putnam ranked second in the district (32 clubs in southern West Virginia) both in per capita giving and in total club giving. The top three clubs in giving were Matewan at $196.88 per member, followed by Putnam at $96.30, and White Sulphur Springs at $90.74. The leader in total club giving was Charleston at $7,210.00, followed by Putnam at $4,430.00, and Barboursville at $3,460.00.
Slater called for a planning session early on to consider additional "hands-on projects" for the club.
Also sworn in today as secretary for the coming year was Vera H. Conley, a comptroller with Putnam County Bank of Hurricane and Teays Valley.
Cheryl Rust will serve as treasurer for the club next year. She was president in 2002-03.
Mary Keely is president-elect for the club. She will advance to president for 2006-07.
